My colorful guide to eating healthy!

Hi everyone, its me Olivia!  

I’m so excited for spring for so many reasons.  Last week, I shared my favorite *spring fashion tips*   for trendy kids like us.  This week, I’m talking about my favorite subject in the whole world…..FOOOOOOD!  Parents can be strict about wanting us to eat well.  Why so serious?  But today, I’m going to show you how to make eating healthy fun!  Who could say no to a fun plate of food?  When we use our imagination, we can have a great time making our food look awesome, and we can enjoy eating it! The possibilities are really endless. This blog is going to be super fun, are you ready? 

This is how we do fruit salad the Olivia way. 

Step #1- Shop for your fruit

Every Sunday my family has a big brunch.  A HUGE brunch. In fact, the entire family comes every single Sunday. To prepare for brunch, we go shopping together!  At the grocery store, I help my mom by picking out fruits that we love.  They’re all really pretty to me, and mom says they can be very healthy.  My favorite fruits are berries.  Mom helps me by choosing a new fruit to try each week.  I love learning about new food, and it’s always a surprise to taste the mystery flavor when we try new fruits.  We’ve tried mango, papaya, and starfruit.  I love them all!  We also buy fun food to eat with our healthy fruit.  Marshmallows, graham crackers, chocolate chips, cheese, and bread are some of our favorites.

If you want to have a big fruit-filled brunch, too, here’s what you will need from the store:

Shopping List

  • Raspberries
  • Blueberries
  • Strawberries
  • Watermelon
  • Bananas
  • Apples
  • Oranges
  • Grapes
  • Rasins
  • Graham Crackers
  • Mini Waffles
  • Bread
  • Shredded cheese
  • Marshmallows! LOTS PLEASE!

 

Step #2- Prepare the snacks with parents and friends

Mom is always with me when I prepare my fresh fruit snacks.  Your parent or guardian should ALWAYS be with you, too!  Safety is so important, so it’s great to have them near.  Make it even more fun by preparing your snack with your brothers, sisters, and friends, too! You can have a ‘best looking plate contest’

How to prepare your snacks:

Make sure you clean your snacks very well before you eat them.  I use a bowl and run cool water over my fruit, and gently clean them with my hands.  Mom helps, sometimes we have to really scrub the outside of the fruit. Once they’re clean, I pat them dry with a towel.  After they are cleaned, they’re ready to be cut, sliced, chopped, and made into our masterpieces!  

Here’s a list of kitchen tools that you will need:

  • A butter knife
  • Cookie cutters (in fun shapes!)
  • Skewers

Cut your fruits into different shapes and sizes.  Use our pictures for examples, or cut them up however you like!  Cut your strawberries in half or into several pieces.  Peel your oranges open and separate it into the sections.  You can even leave some fruits whole, like blueberries and grapes.  It’s up to you to decide!

Step #3- Decorate your plate

When you decorate your plate, just pretend that you are coloring a picture.  Instead of using markers or crayons, you’re using food!  Let’s design a strawberry family plate like my friend Jamie did.  She used strawberries to make the bodies, the leaves from the strawberries to make the hair, blackberries to make the ground, and watermelon to make a heart-shaped sun.

  • Cut some strawberries in half to create the bodies.  Use big strawberries for the adults, and little strawberries for the kids.
  • Cut some small strawberries into 4 pieces or tiny pieces for the legs.
  • Save the leaves from the strawberries to make the hair for the people on your plate that you’d like to have hair.  
  • Use a heart shaped cookie cutter to make a sun!  This one is cut out of a slice of watermelon.
  • Have your adult cut up the raisins into tiny pieces and strips that you can use for eyes and smiles
  • Make your strawberry family on a plate using the blackberries and the pieces that you have cut out!

Make Healthy Eating Fun

We really love our fruit plates because they are pretty and yummy.  They are really healthy, too.  I learned in daisies that you should eat at least 4 servings of fruit each day. When you eat just the right amount of fruits and other healthy foods, they make your body work well.  You can run, and jump, and think, and create when you eat healthy food.  If you’re in a hurry and want quicker ways to eat healthily, there are a lot of foods that your parents can order online or buy at the store.  But you know what, nothing beats making art out of your food!
